Thousands of wedding guests ‘drive home drunk’

Almost one in three wedding guests admits to driving home drunk after the celebrations, according to a major car insurance provider. The new research from Privilege Insurance found that in serious cases, one in six drivers admitted they had consumed more the ten units of alcohol before getting behind the wheel of a car, following a wedding celebration.

Privilege specialises in providing car insurance for drivers with more than four years' no claims, and points out the financial risks as well as the physical danger of driving whilst drunk. Most car insurance firms will look on a drink driving offence badly, raising car

insurance quotes to protect themselves. Ian Parker, managing director of Privilege Insurance, said: "While drink driving is traditionally associated with Christmas, it's also usual to enjoy a couple of glasses of bubbly at weddings.

"But it is clear that many wedding guests are putting themselves and other road users at risk by being over the legal limit when they head home from wedding receptions." He added: "Although we want people to have a great time at weddings this summer, we urge guests not to get into their cars until they've allowed sufficient time for the alcohol from the night before to leave their system - waiting roughly one hour after the festivities have finished for every unit of alcohol consumed."
