Motor insurers urged to treat same-sex couples equally

Motor insurers are to being urged offer similar discounts given to married couples to same-sex couples who have been 'joined' under new legislation. Motor insurers are being urged by Tesco Car Insurance to take note of the Civil Partnerships Act to ensure they treat same-sex couples fairly by offering the same discounts given to married couples. The insurer says 'married people' are generally seen as a safer risk to insurers who sometimes offer up to 15 per cent off the price of their premiums, but some leading brands still do not offer the discount to same sex partners. Allan Burns, head of insurance at Tesco said the company was one of the

first motor insurers to take the view that life stage and not choice of life partner is a key indicator in determining the price of a premium. Mr Burns said: "The Civil Partnerships Act redresses an imbalance in quality. The whole motor insurance industry must make sure it has done the same. "We're please that over the past few years a number of motor insurers have followed our lead and apply preferential rating equally between same and mixed sex couples. But it's worrying that there are still some insurers who don't. We believe treating all customers fairly is the right thing to do." Tesco Car insurance is provided and underwritten by UK Insurance Limited.
