Low temperatures bring driving hazards this week

Drivers are being reminded to ensure their insurance is up to date as the cold brings new hazards to the roads. Recent fog patches brought on by low temperatures have spurred the Highways Agency to warn drivers about the dangers of sight hazards on the roads and to make sure their insurance is up-to-date. The Met Office also expects fog to be a hazard on the roads throughout the country during today and tomorrow, especially in central and southern areas. It said low overnight temperatures, which are predicted to reach freezing after dusk, would create dense pockets of fog in many areas. The Highway's Agency said drivers should be extremely cautious as patchy

fog can suddenly create pockets of reduced visibility. The agency confirmed that gritters would be treating England's motorways and other strategic roads where frost is forecast. Maintenance teams will also be gritting in advance of the cold weather, and will continue to treat motorways throughout winter. To help prevent accidents the agency said drivers should check for up-to-date information about weather and road conditions before they set out on their journeys', and just in case an accident does occur make sure their insurance is adequate and recent. Tips from the agency also included listening to travel news on the radio while driving, keeping warm clothes, food and water and de-icer in the car in case of emergencies, and taking care while overtaking gritters and cars that clear snow. The most important piece of information the agency relayed was that it can take ten times longer to stop when a road is icy, so drivers should allow more room to slow down and stop.
