Cold weather car insurance warning

Britons are being urged to take extra care of their vehicles in cold weather, as cars stolen with the keys left in the ignition to warm the car are not covered by car insurance.

British motorists are being warned to keep a check on their cars this winter, as badly prepared cars could cause accidents and car insurance claims in hazardous driving conditions.

Sainsbury's Bank has also warned motorists against the dangers of 'frosting', which involves thieves stealing cars left unattended with the keys left in the ignition, as they warm up in the mornings. Richard Clark, Sainsbury’s car insurance manager said: "More advanced security systems, locks and immobilisers have

meant that it has become more difficult to steal cars. "However, many thieves are opportunists and could strike if you leave your car running unattended. We are concerned that the predicted extreme cold weather will result in more people taking the risk and becoming victims of frosting." Drivers are also warned their car insurance may well not cover them for the theft of their vehicle should they leave the keys in the ignition. Motorists are urged to check their cars on a regular basis throughout the cold weather, ensuring they are safe to run before every trip. car insurance deals are also worth checking, as motorists who compare car insurance deals may often find bonuses from some policies, such as emergency break-down cover and the use of a courtesy car – such as with Sainsbury's Car Insurance.
